This Plant-based/Vegan Sweet and Salty Tofu recipe is one I founded and tested from Simnett Nutrition on Youtube! You get a golden tofu texture that is crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. You can either bake it in the oven or use an Air Fryer like I did in this photo!
Ingredients:
- 1 Block of extra firm Tofu
- 2 Tbsp of Soy sauce or Tamari (I used Tamari in this recipe)
- 1 Tbsp of Nutritional Yeast
- 1 Tsp of Agave (Feel free to add another Tsp if you would like it to be sweeter or even substitute for Maple Syrup!)
- 1 Tsp of Spicy Brown Mustard
- 1/2 Tsp of Hot Sauce (Use whichever to your liking)
- 1/2 Tsp Garlic Powder
- 1/2 Tsp Onion Powder
Instructions:
Marinate your Tofu
- Prepare your tofu to marinate. Pat dry with a kitchen towel or paper towel and make diagonal cuts on the top of the block of tofu to form an x-pattern from the photo. I suggest cutting 1/3 to 1/2 of the way through the tofu. It should be enough that the spices and flavors we add are able to flow into the tofu cuts.
- Put together the tamari, garlic and onion powder, nutritional yeast, agave, spicy brown mustard, hot sauce until mixed well. Place your tofu in a airtight container and pour the marinade on top. Then flip the tofu to ensure all side are covered. You can continue on immediately or put in the fridge to marinate for 1 hour.
- Next, preheat your oven/air fryer to 375°F. If using an Air fryer, place inside and fry until golden brown (Roughly 15-20 minutes). If using an oven, line a baking tray with a nonstick mat or parchment paper.
- Feel free to add the excess marinade onto the tofu or keep as a side sauce later. Pop the tofu into the oven (if using this method) for 15-20 minutes.
- Remove from the oven/air fryer and add the extra marinade as you wish, enjoy!
